Galeria, Germany’s last national department store chain, filed for insolvency at the Düsseldorf local court on 2 October 2026. The court confirmed it had received the application. Frank Kebekus has been named provisional insolvency administrator, and Handelsblatt reports a regular proceeding rather than self-administration. Stores remain open for now.
It is Galeria’s fourth filing since 2020, and comes about two and a half years after the last one. Plan supervision from the 2024 proceeding at the Essen local court has not been lifted.
Size: 83 stores, about 12,000 staff and more than €2 billion of revenue. Galeria has been owned since summer 2024 by NRDC and an investment vehicle of Bernd Beetz, and took a credit line of up to €160 million in June 2026.
